The Effortless English method
Listen in context, then use stories to practise responding in English.
Core techniques
- Question stories: follow the situation and answer questions.
- Focused listening: notice sounds, rhythm and intonation.
- Changed perspectives: notice tenses in different versions of a story.
- English thinking: understand meaning with less mental translation.
- Emotion: connect language with memorable situations.
- Rules through examples: listen and imitate.
Start with a lesson you can follow
Open a course and try the beginning of a lesson. If you cannot follow the situation, choose an easier lesson or a shorter passage. A familiar lesson is useful for practising without reading.
Use the English–Vietnamese transcript on engless to check unclear sentences. Replay a sentence, return to the full passage and try listening again without looking at the translation.
Answer before you hear the response
If a lesson has a Mini Story section, pause at a question and answer aloud. A short answer is fine. Here is an original engless exercise: after “Maya bought a red bicycle”, answer “What did Maya buy?”. Change the bicycle’s colour and make a new sentence.
If you get stuck, check that part using the transcript or sentence replay, then answer again before hearing the response. Without a Mini Story section, make your own question about the person or action you just heard.
Use progress to keep your routine
The Continue learning card on Home shows points earned toward the lesson goal. Select it to return to your lesson. Up next lists the later lessons in the same course.
Also check what you can do: retell the main idea or answer a question. Review passages where you still depend on the translation. The study guide below walks through a practice session.
Common questions
Which lesson should I choose first?
Read a course description and try an accessible lesson. Choose one whose situation you can follow. The Try a lesson shortcut on Home is another starting point.
Can I use the transcript?
Yes. Check an unclear sentence, then listen again without reading. Adjust playback speed when needed and return to normal speed for familiar passages.
