A seven-day Effortless English listening study plan
This original engless plan gives each session a task while you work with one listening lesson across a week. Adjust session length to your schedule. The seven days organize your practice; they do not promise a particular result within a week.
Before you start: choose a lesson and a goal
Choose a lesson whose main idea you can follow and a study time you can maintain. Write an observable goal, such as retelling three main points without reading the transcript. Working with the same lesson does not require doing exactly the same task in every session.
Days 1–2: understand the situation and clear up difficult sentences
On the first day, listen to the story and note what you understand about the people, actions or problem. Check against the bilingual transcript. Focus on sentences that affect your understanding rather than trying to collect every new word.
On day two, replay a few difficult sentences and listen for word boundaries and connected sounds. Play the full passage again, explain its meaning in your own words and compare your understanding with yesterday.
Days 3–4: practise responding
If a Mini Story is available, pause after a question and answer before hearing the response. Start with a short answer. Without a question section, make your own questions about who did something, what happened or why.
In the next session, try answering with less preparation time. When you make a mistake, return to the relevant sentence. Change a detail in a familiar answer to check whether you can use the language in a slightly different situation.
Days 5–6: listen with less reliance on the text
Listen to a passage without watching the screen. Consult the transcript only for a specific unclear point, then replay without reading. If you reduced playback speed earlier, return to normal speed for sections you now understand.
On day six, retell the story in a few sentences or record a short answer for yourself. Compare it with your original goal. Is the meaning right? Are there sentences you can read but still cannot recognize by ear? Use those observations to choose your review task.
Day 7: review before moving on
Listen without translation, answer a few questions and retell the main idea. If there are still large gaps, stay with the lesson and make your next goal smaller. If you can follow and respond, try the next lesson while keeping a short review session for the previous one.
This is an original engless schedule. Consult the source below for the original method; reaching day seven is not, by itself, a reason to move on.
Common questions
Should I restart if I miss a day?
Continue with your most recent task and warm up with a familiar passage. Adjust your schedule so it is easier to maintain rather than trying to catch up on many lessons at once.
What if I only have 15 minutes?
Use a short passage: listen for meaning, check one difficult point and listen again without reading. This is a suggestion for a short session; allow more time on another day to practise the rest of the lesson.
